In a world where traditional religious involvement is diminishing, individuals are seeking new ways to connect. Worship is one of humanity's most basic needs. There is a need for rituals and customs that keep us on track while also meeting our need for community.

The sports stadium has increasingly become that place of community. Whereas churches were once places of community and worship, stadiums around the world now attract massive crowds who commit the day to having a good time. Their communion is to celebrate their team, sing their anthems, and give back to the community through a variety of donations and programs.

Saturday night is better known as college football night, while Sunday, which was once known as the Lord's Day, is now known as NFL Day. Families and friends have started a new tradition of gathering around the barbecue during tailgates instead of the altar. Stadiums have grown to suit every demand, including food, beverages, music, entertainment, and, most significantly, a sense of community.

During my time with Austin FC, I noticed that many people were not just present for the game. They came to meet friends, eat local food, explore the vibrant bar scene, buy merchandise, and relax in the stadium's vivid, green spaces. The match itself frequently becomes background noise for a greater social event. The supporters section lifted the emotions of passionate fans whose love for their city and team went above and beyond, and it provided them with an occasion to celebrate, much as ritualistic festivities had done in the past.

Athletes have become idols. Fans sing their names, write songs, share memes, and track their every action on and off the field. They lay bets on them, and they feel more connected than ever to their favorite stars. They celebrate their victories while mourning their misfortunes. In many ways, their dedication resembles ancient traditions of worship.

Sports are no longer simply games. They are contemporary rituals that promote community, emotional release, and belonging. Communion looks different now, but the need for it is the same.
